Reproduce a broken part in 3D: complete guide to photos, scanning and printing

Part unavailable, broken or obsolete? Learn how to reproduce a part with 3D printing: photos, scanning, modeling, material choice and realistic lead times.

You have a broken unavailable part — shutter clip, machine cover, boat hook tip, appliance component — and the manufacturer no longer supplies it. 3D printing reproduction is often the only viable solution: faster than molding, cheaper than a rare original part, and perfectly suited to your use.

At NC Factory in Antibes, we reproduce hundreds of parts per year for individuals, garages, yacht crews and SMEs. This guide covers the complete process, from the initial photo to the delivered part.

When 3D reproduction is the right solution

  • The original part is no longer in catalog (discontinued product, brand gone)
  • Supplier lead time is unacceptable (weeks or months of waiting)
  • The part is plastic, resin or light metal and not subject to critical safety constraints
  • You have at least photos and approximate dimensions
  • The cost of a new original part is disproportionate to the object

Warning: parts subject to safety standards (brakes, steering, harnesses, certified medical equipment) must not be reproduced without engineering validation. Contact us to assess your case.

The 4 reproduction steps

  • Step 1 — Documentation: send 3-5 photos from different angles with a scale reference (ruler, coin). Note key dimensions if known.
  • Step 2 — 3D modeling or scan: our engineering team recreates the 3D file. For complex geometries, 3D scanning of the intact part enables precise reconstruction. Modeling lead time: 24-48h.
  • Step 3 — Material choice: PETG for indoor/humidity, ASA for outdoor/UV, Nylon for mechanical strength, TPU for flexibility.
  • Step 4 — Print and delivery: production in 24-48h after model validation. Typical cost: €15-80 for a single plastic part.

Real examples of reproduced parts

  • Home: roller shutter clip, furniture handle, pool pipe adapter, outlet cover
  • Appliances: washing machine knob, fridge hinge, filter support
  • Automotive: engine cover, sensor mount, interior trim clip
  • Marine: boat hook tip, hardware clip, locker latch, vent grille
  • Tools and machinery: drill handle, protective cover, plastic gear

FAQ

Yes, in most cases. Photos from multiple angles with a scale reference are enough to model the part. For tight tolerances, 3D scanning or the physical part is preferable.

Between €15 and €80 for a simple plastic part (modeling included). CNC machined metal parts start around €30-50. Free quote within 24h.

Allow 2 to 5 business days total: 24-48h modeling + 24-48h printing. We can expedite on request.

With the right material (Nylon, ASA, reinforced PETG), the reproduced part matches or exceeds original plastic strength. We choose material based on actual mechanical constraint.

No, it's not required. Photos suffice in 80% of cases. You can drop the part at our Antibes workshop or request an on-site scan.
